When choosing a nursing home for a loved one, families have a number of factors to consider before making any final decisions.

Carolyn Pickering, an assistant professor at Michigan State University, decided to conduct research in an effort to determine what leads to nursing home abuse and neglect. To this end, Pickering interviewed a number of nursing home employees before coming to the following conclusions.

Under-staffing is considered one of the more pervasive problems in the health care industry. Ironically, many caregivers in elderly homes are driven to quit due to the lack of support, causing this issue to worsen. Poor working conditions are a factor as well, specifically the fact that few employees are required to do more work than they are reasonably capable of doing alone. Beyond this, these employees work for very little compensations, a factor which may put them in “morally distressing positions where they don’t have a choice about the quality of care they provide.”

 

While these issues are serious and should be dealt with, no elderly resident in a nursing home deserves to bear the brunt of conditions that they cannot control.
